The April 1, 2000 Chuck Furjanic, Golf Collectibles Auction was a great success with a number of lots setting records. The “Patent Applied For” Cran Cleek, G-8+ brought $3080., the “Pat. Applied For” Hagen Concave Sand Wedge in Superb G-9 condition realized $1045. and a mint “Ocobo” gutta percha ball circa 1895-1900 fetched $2090., a superb “Park Compressed Head Brassie” G-9, $1375. and a red mesh wrapped ball by “Miller & Taylor, Glasgow” brought $467.50. were all record prices. Other items of interest were the “Jn Gray” Cleek G-7+, $2090., a “Star Challenger” G-6+, $2090, a mint “Colonel Crescent Dimple, $880., a Spalding “Baseball” mark Rut Niblick G-7, $715, a Morris long nose putter $1980. and a Hogan Bronze for $2090.

5 A SCARCE TAYLOR ALUMINUM MALLET PUTTER. A "Mills" type head with "Model 'F'" on the sole and "J H Taylor, Reg. # 607239" above and below the unusual raised "sight" line on the head. Hosel repair covered by whipping. G-5+ $90-175

6 AN UNDERRATED "BEAUMONT" ALUMINUM head mallet. "F" and "Pat Apl'd For" on the sole and "Beaumont" on the back. The "C" shaped aluminum head has a raised black sightline and a steel face insert. A nice collectible from the late 1920's. $120-200

109 A CRAN CLEEK STAMPED "PATENT APPLIED FOR". An outstanding all original "CRAN" Cleek circa early 1897 with "The Spalding, CRAN, Patent Applied For" stamped between the original screws on the back. The original shaft is also stamped "The Spalding" below an almost perfect original grip. The wood face insert has no chips or dents and does not exhibit much play, if any! What else could be better; a nearly SUPERB example of one of the first Cran Cleeks made by Spalding. An American club collector's dream come true! G-8+ $1200-2400

110 A CRAN CLEEK circa 1915 stamped only "A G Spalding & Bros." on the back and "Cleek-C" on the sole. The original wood face insert is near perfection. Shaft and wrapped leather grip are originals. Cran Cleeks were introduced in 1897 and were offered in catalogues as late as 1917. A nice example. G-7+ $800-1300

111 A SEELY PATENT DRIVING IRON stamped "Seely Patent, Pat May 14, 1912" and "W Hoare, Special". Shaft and grip are originals. First Driving Iron I've seen offered! G-6 $800-1300

114 A JOHN GRAY CLEEK. "Jn Gray" stamped boldly on the back of the circa 1870's long shallow blade. Hickory shaft and sheep skin grip appear to be originals, or superbly done period pre-1890 replacements. A wonderful addition to even the most advanced collections. $1500-2500

122 A GOOD GENERAL PURPOSE IRON. A mid to late 19th Century General Purpose Iron with a slightly dished and hooked smooth face. The nearly five inch long hosel with a squared of top of blade and hosel join has deep heavy saw tooth nicking indicative of Pre-1875 irons. The replacement shaft is stamped "R Forgan & Sons, St. Andrews" below a period type grip. G-6 $400-800

123 AN EARLY LEFT HANDED GENERAL PURPOSE IRON circa 1850's. The thick hosel has deep, sharp, jagged nicking. Part of the sheep skin grip is missing exposing underlistings. G-6 $900-1500

126 A GOOD GENERAL PURPOSE IRON circa 1870-1880 the smooth, slightly hooked face has a nearly five inch long hosel and a squared off top of blade and hosel join. The replacement grip is stamped "Aitken" below an old leather grip. This looks like a Willie Park, Sr. forging. G-6 $350-550

127 A BUSSEY IRON WITH ORIGINAL ONE PIECE GRIP. "Patented Steel Socket" and "Thistle" below "Bussey & Co., London" on a smooth face Iron. The steel socket "Seam" clearly visible on the hosel. 130 A SCARCE SCOTTISH GOLF COMPANY WOOD. "SGCMCo Ltd, Edinburgh" is on the honey colored transitional pear shaped beechwood head. SGCMCo was only in business 1895-1898. 131 A SCARCE McEWAN BULGER. A very scarce and seldom offered circa 1890's semi-long nose Bulger face Play Club with "McEwan" boldly on the medium brown Beech head. There is pronounced curve from heel to toe producing a "bulge" at the sweet spot, thus the name "Bulger". Today, clubs with a similar face design are labeled "Geer" effect. Appears all original with a nice thick sheep skin grip. G-7 $900-1450

132 A SUPERB PARK BRASSIE with a full brass sole plate. The head is boldly stamped "W Park's Compressed Patent". The face is fitted with a leather insert and a ram's horn slip between the face and the full brass sole plate. Back of head has three circular lead weights as made. Original shaft is stamped below a nice old grip. I've seen only one better example in 12 years and it sold for $1700.! My first impression of this club was simply "WOW!" G-9 $600-1200

133 A FORGAN LONG NOSE BRASSIE with "R Forgan" above the "Prince of Wales" stamp on a circa 1885 golden Beech head. Original shaft stamped below an original tattered grip. There is a small grain flake at the toe that keeps this club from being SUPERB and worth $3000+. G-7+++ $1300-2200

134 A MITCHESON LONG NOSE PLAY CLUB circa 1885-1890 with a slightly hooked faced. "W L Mitcheson" on the head and shaft. The whippings at the grip and splice appear to be original. G-8 $950-1750

139 A SCOTT PATENTED "FORK SPLICE" Driver with the 1902-1910 "Plume" mark and "A H Scott Patent No 21444". Splice whippings and the grip are replacements. G-5 $300-500

140 A WILLIE PARK COMPRESSED HEAD SPOON circa 1890's with "Park's Compressed Patent" on the compact, well lofted head. The face has a full leather insert, a brass sole plate and there are three circular back lead weights. The head and neck were "steamed" and "bent" allowing the grain to run from the head, straight up the shaft. John Dunn's "One Piece", patented several years later, was probably copied from this principle. All original with a marked shaft. Splice whipping replaced. G-6 $375-700

141 A HARRY VARDON DRIVER. "Harry Vardon, Ganton" on an outstanding Persimmon head Driver with a leather face insert. Vardon was at Ganton 1897-1903, so this club can be accurately dated "Turn of the Century". A wonderful example with an all weather grip over the original stamped shaft. Vardon was Br. Open Champion in 1898, 1899 and 1903 and the 1900 US Open while at Ganton. G-8 $375-650

142 A SLAZENGER SCREW SOCKET BRASSIE in near mint condition. "Patent No 682860, Slazenger Special" on the head of this 1901 patent club. No "play" lines on the brass sole plate and no disturbance of the diagonal face lines. The hosel whipping looks original, however, the black calf grip has shrunk and needs to be replaced.
